 Today we welcome back our Bamfield friends! They jumped right in as we discussed Strong/Weak Acids & Bases. Practice on pg. 125 #21-27. Happy end of Term!

 After the QQQ today, we had a look at Atoms! We discussed some of the History of Atoms. Here is the Building an Atom activity! Afterwards, we took some summary notes.

Sci 8: Wed Apr 15 - Temp Change Lab!

 Today we had a lot of lab work! You worked on the Temperature During Phase Changes Lab (7-4 on pg. 256). Don't forget to include your graph, the questions from the textbook, and a conclusion. This will be due on Monday. If you finished, you also had time to complete the Density Lab from last day.

Chem 12: Wed Apr 15 - Unit 3 Test + Conjugates!

 This morning you wrote the Unit 3: Solubility Test! After that we had a look at Conjugate Acids & Bases with practice on pg. 119 & 121.

Chem 12: Tues Apr 14 - Bronsted Lowry

 Today we had another look at Acids & Bases by looking at the Bronsted-Lowry definitions. We took some notes and then you had practice on pg. 117 #11 & 12 and pg. 119 #13 & 14. Solubility Test tomorrow!

Sci 8: Tues Apr 14 - Density Lab!

 Today we had time to do the Density Lab! There will be some time tomorrow (during our next lab) to complete lab if needed.

Chem 12: Mon Apr 13 - Unit 4 intro

 Today we introduced Unit 4: Acid-Base Chemistry. We talked through our Key Questions and Reviewed Chem 11 definitions. Then you had some work/study time.

Sci 8: Mon Apr 13 - Density!

 Today we worked through Density as a way to measure particle compactness; we took some notes, did some practice on pg. 269, had a look at this visual of floating, and then you read pgs. 260 - 265.

Sci 8: Tues Apr 7 - Unit 3: Matter Intro

Today we introduced Unit 3: Matter. We took some intro notes with some of the basic ideas we'll need throughout the unit, and then we looked at a couple of simulations: the scale of the universe, and the way particles are attracted to each other. You'll continue investigating this tomorrow after the Unit 2: Disease & Immunity test.

HS 101: Tues Apr 7 - AI

 Today we had a chance to discuss AI - what it actually is, the key idea of how it works, and its limitations. We watched the first 3 Code.org AI videos and then you had some project work time. 4 classes to go!

Chem 12: Tues Apr 7 - Changing Solubility

 Today we cranked through the final new material for Unit 3. Here are the notes on Changing Solubility; practice on pg. 108 # 81 - 86.

Sci 8: Thurs Apr 2 - Review time

 Today we had some time to finish up the Concept Map and Review Assignment. Happy Easter!

Chem 12: Thurs Apr 2 - Selective Precipitation and Lab 19C

 Today we had a look at how to selectively precipitate specific ions in order to do a qualitative analysis. Here are the notes (we'll revisit the questions later). Then you did Lab 19C, precipitating some Lead (II) Iodide. Labs will be due on Wed April 8th.

Chem 12: Tues Mar 31 - Minimum [ ] for precipitation.

 Today we had a look at the minimum [ ] needed for precipitations to occur. We took some notes, you practiced on pg. 98 #65 - 69. At the end, you received the Ksp Assignment (due at the end of Thursday).

Sci 8: Tues Mar 31 - Concept Map work time

 Today we had more time to finish off your concept map project. If you didn't finish, there will be time during our double block to finish, but your Review Assignment is also due at the end of that day, so plan your time accordingly!

Chem 12: Mon Mar 30 - Ktrial and Precipitation calculations

 Today we did some good QQ recap of before the break, and then we looked at how to calculate Ktrial values to determine if a precipitate will form. Here are the notes (just pgs. 1 & 2), and the practice is on pg. 98 #56 - 64.

 Today we had a look at the last few things we'll be doing in our 7 remaining classes. Then we introduced our powerpoint projects and you had some work time!

 Today we had some Unit 2 review time in the form of the Concept Map Review project. You also received the Unit 2 Review Assignment which will be due during Thursday's double block.

Sci 8: Fri Mar 13 - Unit 2 Recap

 After your QQQ today, we did a recap of our Unit 2: Disease & Immunity. We also watched a couple videos that summarized Tetanus, Allergies, and the Lines of Defence in your Immune System.

Chem 12: Fri Mar 13 - Ksp

 After the QQQ today, we had a look at Ksp calculations (like Keq calculations, but for solutions specifically). Practice on pg. 95 #42 - 55. Have a great Spring Break!

Chem 12: Thurs Mar 12 - Solubilities

 Today we covered quite a bit of material, but most of it was review from Chem 11: we defined solubility in terms of equilibrium at saturation, calculated solubility [ ]'s, and then after break we looked at low solubility combinations and precipitates. We had a couple of J.o.W questions, and then you had some practice: pg. 76 #3 - 7, pg. 77 #8 -17, pg. 83 #21,22,24, and pg. 87 #25. Do what you need to master this stuff!

Sci 8: Thurs Mar 12 - When the immune system doesn't work properly

 Today we had a few extra Quick Questions, and then we went over the questions on Pg. 109. After that you read pgs. 110-114 and then we took some notes summarizing what you read. After that, we did some J.o.W. and watched a couple videos about Smallpox Eradication and Vaccinations.

Sci 8: Tues Mar 10 - Finishing Lines of Defence

 Today we had a chance to finish off our notes about the Lines of Defence in the body. Then we watched a couple videos: the simple version, and the more complex version. To finish, you worked on question #1 - 20 on pg. 109. Please finish these for homework if you are not already done.

 Today we started discussing more of how your body fights off pathogens and disease. You read through pgs. 100 - 105 in the textbook, and then we started in on our Lines of Defence Notes.

 Today we did a quick intro to Unit 3: Solutions. We went over some key questions and did a bit of Chem 11 refreshing. Practice on pg. 81 #18 & 20. You can always work on these after your test tomorrow!

 Today we started off our review of Unit 2: Equilibrium. We did a recap of the unit, and then you had time to work on the Unit 2 Practice Review (here is the answer key). At the end of class, you received the Unit 2 Review Assignment which is due during Friday's work time.

Sci 8: Tues Mar 3 - Beneficial Microbes and how to Play Pandemic!

 Today we had a look at a couple videos to get some visuals of the disease concepts we've been looking at so far; we saw viruses infecting cells, some of the ideas that led to "germ theory," the importance of our gut "microbiome," and some food products that rely on microbes. We jotted a couple of notes about beneficial microbes, and then we learned how to play the game Pandemic!

 Today you wrote the Unit 1: Cells test. We had some extra time at the end, so we also went over it!

Chem 12: Fri Feb 27 - QQQ #3 and Keq Calculations Pt. 2

 After QQQ #3 today, we worked through a few more challenging Keq Calculations. This requires a lot of practice, which can be found on pg. 70 #52,55,58-66. Labs are due on Monday!

 Today you had a chance to see some equilibria in action! You performed Lab 19A (parts 1, 2, and 3 only). Your lab report with questions #1-5, follow-up #1, and a conclusion are due on MONDAY.

Sci 8: Wed Feb 25 - Intro to Unit 2 Disease & Immunity

 Today we introduced Unit 2: Disease and Immunity. We took some intro notes, and then you read pgs. 56-57 and listed out each body system with a description. Then you worked on some practice questions, pg. 63 # 3-6,8-10. After break we did some QQ, JoW, corrected the pg. 63 questions, and then discusssed these Disease Definitions that we'll be using throughout the unit. No homework aside from studying for the test!

 Today we were out of the computer lab due to the gr. 10 - 12 Career Day; fortunately, we got to play some Catan instead :)

Chem 12: Tues Feb 24 - Keq Calculations Pt. 1

Today we started doing some calculations with Keq expressions. After the notes and examples, you did some practice on pg. 70 # 47 - 57 (except 52 and 55). Make sure these go well... we'll be needing to build on this next class!

 Today we had a look at the Equilibrium Constant, and how to write the Equilibrium Expression that calculates it. Here are the notes, and your practice is on pg. 60 #31 - 35 and pg. 62 # 36 - 45.

Chem 12: Fri Feb 20 - Le Chatelier's Principle

 Today we had a look at Le Chatelier's Principle. After the notes, you did some practice on pg. 54 #17-28 and pg. 56 #29-30. Then you got to see your test marks!

 Today you wrote QQQ #2! Then we had a look at how information actually travels over the internet. Then you had some time on your projects, and we prepared for Catan next day!

Sci 8: Fri Feb 20 - Finish up Cheek Smear and Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

 Today you wrote QQQ #3; after that, you had some time to finish up your Cheek Smear Lab Report, and then you worked on the Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Practice Questions. We'll start our review of unit 1 next week, in preparation for the Unit 1 Test on Friday Feb 27th.

Sci 8: Thurs Feb 19 - Photosynthesis, Cellular Respiration, and Cheek Cells.

 Today we had a look at Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis with some notes. Then you had a chance to try some wet mount slides, in preparation for the Cheek Smear Investigation after break. Great job (eventually) finding your own cells! We'll finish off the labs next day!

Chem 12: Thurs Feb 19 - Unit 1 Test and Entropy!

 Today, you wrote the unit 1 test. After break we had a look at whether or not Products will form in a given reaction by finding the interplay between energy and ENTROPY. You took notes, and then had practice on pg. 48 #14 - 16.

Chem 12: Tues Feb 17 - Unit 2 Intro

Today we kicked off Unit 2: Equilibrium. We took some Notes and had a look graphs of [ ] vs time and Rates vs time using the data on pgs. 40 & 41 of the textbook. We also used this demo to see how the forward and reverse reactions are still happening at equilibrium, they just balance out. 

Sci 8: Tues Feb 17 - Cell Organelles

 Today we finished off the comparing plant and animal cells worksheet from last day. After going through it, you worked on the Organelles Assignment (due next class).

Chem 12: Thurs Feb 12 - Review Time!

 Today we had some discussion and a moment of silence regarding the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge. After that, we had QQQ #2, JoW, and bunches of Review Time! Reviews are DUE on Tuesday!

Sci 8: Thurs Feb 12 - MDI survey, Comparing Cells, QQQ, and J.o.W!

 Today we had a busy class! We started off with the MDI survey in the library. After that, we finished off any existing work you had, plus the comparison of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells. After break, we had our QQQ #2, and then some J.o.W. and discussion. We finished off with comparing Plant and Animal Cells (using this video and pgs. 24-30 in your textbook); we'll go over it next day!

HS 101: Wed Feb 11 - Checking your marks and MyBlueprint sign up!

 Today we had a look at how to sign in to MyEd BC to check your marks in your classes. You also signed up for MyBlueprint.ca to start some of the surveys we'll work on.

Sci 8: Tues Feb 10 - Slides and Cell Theory

 Today we worked through the first page of our notes on Cell Theory. Then we had some time to finish off our Using the Microscope "experiment" from last day (if you did not finish, please come in on Thursday at lunch to finish it off).

HS 101: Tues Feb 10 - Bits, Bytes, and 2048!

 Today we continued discussing how computers are information machines by looking at the different names for the units that represent the number of bits (kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes...etc). After that, you had some time to work on your projects, and then as a treat, we had a look at how to play 2048!

Chem 12: Tues Feb 10 - Unit 1 Recap and Review Practice

 Today we did a Recap of Unit 1 ideas. After that, we watched a quick video of Catalysts in catalytic converters. After that, you got the Unit 1 Practice Review (here is the answer key), and then finally the Unit 1 Review Assignment (Due Tuesday at the LATEST).

Sci 8: Mon Feb 9 - Microscope Field of View

 Today those of us who weren't at basketball worked more on using the microscopes. We worked partway through this investigation to see if we could figure out how big something is based on what we see under the microscope; we did not finish, so we'll wrap it up tomorrow!

Chem 12: Mon Feb 9 - Catalysts

 Today we had our final set of notes for Unit 1 on Catalysts! After that, you had some time to work on the practice problems: pg. 34 #56 - 61, and pg. 36 #62 - 63.

Chem 12: Fri Feb 6 - QQQ #1 and Reaction Mechanisms

After your QQQ today, we took some notes on Reaction Mechanisms; there were a *few* minutes left for you to work on the practics: Pg. 28 #46 - 53 & Pg. 30 #54 - 55. Don't forget your lab 18C reports are due on Monday.

HS 101: Fri Feb 6 - QQQ #1 and Binary Numbers!

 Today you wrote Quick Questions Quiz #1. After that (and typing), we had a chance to learn a bit about the Binary Number System. After discussing how number systems work (# symbols = place value base number), we watched this video challenge, and this video about how computers use binary. You then had some project work time (including the RSS Website Project).

Sci 8: Fri Feb 6 - QQQ #1 and Microscopes!

 Today you wrote your first Quick Questions Quiz (#1)! After that, you read pgs. 11 - 14 in your textbook to introduce yourselves to microscopes. Then we worked through this page of microscope parts and functions. After that you had a chance to try out the microscopes with a bunch of different slides at low, medium and high power!

Sci 8: Wed Feb 4 - Alka Seltzer Lab and Unit 1 Intro

Today you did the Alka Selzter Lab as a first experiment using the Scientific Method. After we discussed how to complete your lab report, we did some Jar of Wonder! To end off the class, we had a look at the Key Questions for Unit 1, watched some animated examples of cell machinery, and then you used pg. 10 of the textbook to complete this chart on the characteristics of living things.

Chem 12: Tues Feb 3 - KE distributions

 Today we took some notes on Kinetic Energy Distributions. After that, you had some practice problems on pg. 16 #24-28 (last days questions), pg. 19 #29 - 30, and pg. 23 #34 - 40. At the end of class we had a quick look at what you need in a lab report to prep us for Lab 18C tomorrow.

HS 101: Mon Feb 2 - What is a computer and some work time.

 Today we did our QQ and typing practice; after that we discussed what makes a computer a computer? Then you had some work time on your projects (Using OneNote & Organizing your files).

Chem 12: Mon Feb 2 - Rates Assignment and Energy in Rxns

 Today you had some time to work on the Rates Assignment and then we took some notes on Energy in Rxns (similar to sec. 1.6).

Sci 8: Mon Feb 2 - Science Equipment and Experimental Questions

 Today you had a look at a whole bunch of different science equipment. After that, you were given some "experimental questions" and you had to form a hypothesis, list out variables, and plan how you could test your hypothesis while keeping control of the variables.

Sci 8: Fri Jan 30 - How we do Science

 After our QQ today, we had a look at how to actually DO science. We brainstormed some great ideas about doing science, then you read Pg.s 476 - 479, and we summarized the Scientific Method. Then we watched Mark Rober use these ideas to design a rock skipper. Then we finished off with matching up some Scientific Method Terms.

Chem 12: Fri Jan 30 - Collision Theory

 Today we did a few QQ, and then we had a look at Collision Theory (Sec 1.5). We took some great notes, had a look at this simulation to see some collisions in action, and then you had practice on pg. 12 # 20 - 22.

Chem 12: Wed Jan 28 - Chem 11 Overview, Unit 1 Intro & Rates

 Today we did a quick recap of Chem 11 using some old final exam questions. After that we took some intro notes about the Key Questions of the course, and then started in on Unit 1: Reaction Kinetics. We took notes on Sec 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 with practice questions on pg. 2 #1-5 and pg. 8 - 10 #12 - 17.

Sci 8: Wed Jan 28 - Textbook tour, Safety, and Science!

After our Quick Questions we did a Tour of the Textbook. Then in the second half, we brainstormed some safety ideas, worked through this Safety T/F, and then discussed how science is about our best guesses!
